Long-time residents continue to bring the spirit of Halloween to Tejon Street

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Old North End of Colorado Springs invites quite the sight for ongoing trick-or-treaters and their families.

The cross streets of Tejon St. and Uintah pack one of the best places with residents who have been there a while, continuing to be a place where they go all out.

It's not just the giant houses that make the street an ideal place for children looking to trick-or-treat. It's the dedication of those who live there and their passion that brings the spirit of Halloween to life. Some would say it resurrects it.

Long-time resident Doug Gardner told me that one purchase started it all.

"One character, the one up here, and each year the disease was contagious," Gardner said.

Every year, Doug's house has been a creative hub for decorations and has about just over a dozen skeletons that take on different themes.

His neighbor across the street, Derry Darby, is also a Halloween fanatic who cherishes the opportunity to decorate his house for Halloween.

"I started buying an old lamp that your grandmother used to have with the three lights at the top; I'd buy at antique stores, then I'd go to K-Mart the day after Halloween, and they would literally give the costumes away. I'm like a mad scientist in my garage building these things," Darby said.

To some, it might get a little wild, but to these guys, it's something they look forward to year after year.

"It got out of control, but our psychiatrist tells us it's perfectly okay. It's been a lot of fun for years," Gardner said.
